Biggest Podcast Trends for Businesses

by | Jun 6, 2024

Last week, I attended the Podcast Show in London. Having joined Alice Violet Creative three months ago, this was my chance to explore the world of podcasting beyond our own projects and clients.

The show offered valuable insights into this ever-changing, powerful content form. Attending panel discussions at the Creator’s Stage with industry leaders like John Newis-Smith, Ami Bennett, and Darby Dorras and learning behind-the-scenes insights from The Banksy Story creatives at the BBC sound stage, featuring Steph Warren, Dan Clarke, and James Peak.

Connecting with and learning from some of the best creatives in the podcast communities taught me so much,  like the importance of owning your niche and the ongoing evolution of podcast production.

Among the topics covered were this year’s exciting trends, innovations, and emerging technologies that promise to shape the future of podcasting in 2024.

Here are the top business podcast trends to watch this year and how to include them in your strategy.

Video Podcasting: The Visual Evolution

As major platforms like Spotify invest in and push video content to their audiences, the evolution of audio-only to visual podcasting is one of our favourite trends to tap into. We launched the Cyber Made Human podcast with video and audio last year, which enables heaps of benefits like:

  • The ability to record live events
  • Greater exposure on all social media platforms (that prioritise video content)
  • The ability to easily create engaging short videos to promote the show
  • Stand out and offer your audience the option to listen or watch depending on their preference
  • Build closer rapport with your audience and guests.

Recognising the visual evolution of podcasts and the demand for visually enriched storytelling will ensure your podcast stays relevant. Video podcasts are undeniably more time-intensive, both on the production and editing side, but tapping into this medium is undoubtedly worth it.

Tip: When creating promotional clips, AI can streamline production and enhance personalisation.

Content Repurposing: Maximum Value

As content producers, we are huge advocates for repurposing everything you create. Once you’ve invested time in any content’s creative concept, production, editing and distribution, give it as much exposure as possible by repurposing that.

How can I repurpose my podcast content? By repurposing, we mean creating short video clips, blog posts, infographics, and social media content from podcast episodes.

As an example, here’s how we repurposed this episode of the Cyber Made Human podcast.

  • Clip the most intriguing parts of the show into one-minute videos resized and optimised for each platform. Tip: use cliffhangers and topics that might spark a debate and ask your audience in the caption, “Do you agree or disagree?”
  • A short write-up in a blog
  • Images are shared behind the scenes during recording to tease the episode, and graphics or images are shared to promote the show once it goes live.

We feature our episodes in community newsletters for greater exposure. Such strategies help reach different audience segments and keep the content relevant, not limiting your podcast’s reach by your audience’s attention span. Remember, although you feel you’re sharing the same content heaps of times, you’re fighting for exposure in a busy algorithm, and your audience will only see and engage with one or two pieces of repurposed content.

Live Podcasting: In Real-Time

Live podcasting allows creators to seamlessly record their episodes in front of a live or virtual audience in real-time. Here are some of the main benefits:

  • You are exposed to a live audience that you can encourage to subscribe and engage with the show. We attended the ISF Congress in Rotterdam last year and turned one of their keynote panel discussions into an episode of The Insight Analyst Podcast
  • You are turning a live panel discussion or keynote talk into a new format, making it stand out.
  • You can repurpose live event content, minimising the need to record the content twice.
  • The connection and immediacy of live podcasting allow the audience to become involved and ask questions.

How Do I Record Live At an Event

One of the biggest mistakes we see when people record podcasts at events is seeking out a tiny room or professional podcast studio to record in! This defeats the purpose, as the audience can’t attend the show, and it tends to be visually unappealing.

Instead, we curate areas in large enclosed rooms that are visually engaging. Here at The County Business Show at Gloucestershire University, we chose a large room with space for 50 audience members and set up a comfortable space with sofas to interview. Our kit and post-production process means that background noise is minimal, but we also mention that we have an audience present in case there’s background noise.

You don’t have to stream the podcast live at the event; we recommend editing it and sharing it later. But platforms such as StreamYard enable you to be live on YouTube or in a private invite-only area if you want to. Virtual live podcasts also enable you to do the whole thing online with guests in different countries, adding limitless opportunities.

AI: Revolutionising Content Creation

Artificial intelligence is transforming podcast creation and distribution, and it has grown 500% in the past year. 66% of podcasters incorporate AI tools into their projects. Generative AI tools are helping podcasters create content more efficiently, with personalised recommendations, and optimise listener experiences.

This includes AI-powered transcription, advertising, and content curation, which enhances audience engagement and opens new revenue streams. Leveraging AI advancements and short-form videos is also the key to expanding your reach and adapting to consumer preferences.

Business Podcast Trends: Summarised

The podcasting industry is shifting towards more structured monetisation strategies, and securing sponsorships is a great opportunity to grow your podcast. Beyond traditional advertising, premium subscriptions and partnerships, podcasters are exploring sponsorship opportunities, as sponsors provide the financial backing needed to enhance production quality and reach a wider audience.

Sponsorship: Structured Monetisation

From a business perspective, sponsoring or being a guest on existing, established shows is a great way to expose yourself to an engaged audience.

We help clients create pilot episodes or creative concepts to approach sponsors which allow them to invest in our high-quality production services. Sponsors can provide the financial backing needed to enhance production quality and ensure you have the resources to maintain and improve your podcast over time.
